Artist’s Bio

Richard Colby’s artwork is largely comprised of figurative sculptures formed by folding metals, such as steel and bronze, to create abstracted bodies. Although the bodies are hollow, his simple method of reshaping these rigid material creates an illusion of full bodied shapes using negative or void space.

Having always lived in Otsego County, Richard Colby studied art locally, graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Art Studies from Herkimer College in 2014 and a Dual Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Art History from Hartwick College in 2016. Colby received distinction in Art from Hartwick College being named a Faculty Scholar, one of the college’s most prestigious honors.

Colby has been recognized with several highest distinctions in local juried shows such as Hartwick College’s annual Juried Student Exhibition in 2016, and Oneonta’s Peep Show, 2 years running, 2016-2017, and Hyde Hall 200th Anniversary Art Exhibition. Furthermore, Colby has had many of his paintings published in Phaethon, the literary and art publication of Herkimer College.

Recently, Colby has begun to sell his sculptures domestically and internationally with sales reaching as far as Australia.
